Velez and David Named Athletes of the Week

Damien David (Montreal, Quebec/Georges Vanier) of the men's tennis team scored three total victories at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships. After earning a singles seed and a first-round bye, David won his second-round match in three sets but was forced to retire from his third-round contest due to injury. In doubles, David combined with Ivan Vereshchaga (Perm, Russia/Bonn (Germany)) to finish 2-1 with wins over opponents from Boston College and Binghamton before falling to the tournament's top seeded duo.

Stephanie Velez (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) of the women's soccer team scored the game-winning goal in the 86th minute as UB beat Western Michigan 1-0. The senior forward came in off the bench in the second half and stepped up to take a direct free kick from just past the 18-yard box, straight on. She beat the Broncos' five-player wall and tucked her shot in the lower left corner to give the team a late lead which it would not relinquish and kept UB's hopes for a MAC tournament berth alive.
